“INDIAN GINSENG”: Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera) has been used in the traditional Indian systems of medicine (Unani, Ayurveda) for thousands of years. Ashwagandha belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Other known plants in the Solanaceae family include goji berries, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant. Pertaining to the smell of the root, “ashwa” translates to horse and “gandha” to smell, as the fresh root is said to smell like a ‘wet horse.’ Folklore has it that it was believed that the horse smell was an indication that consuming the root would give a person the power of a horse. Ashagandha root contains numerous biologically-active compounds which exert health benefits when consumed.*
